Many are considering to do a respray for their car in recent times, some just want a new look for their car, but others are seriously weighing renewing COE or not. In our world today where COE prices have skyrocketed to unbelievable levels, car ownership has been even more costly and every dollar spent become ever more precious. Lately, we have noted that many car owners have this one common question; should we do a whole respray or just exterior only?
We got you covered in this.

Key Difference #1:
An exterior car respray is a less comprehensive spray painting as compared to a full/whole car respray. To put in simple terms, exterior only respray is spray painting on the outer panels of the car while a whole car respray involves both outer and hidden panels of the car.

Exterior only Respray option: Areas of respray are denoted in white paint. Observe that these areas can be seen from the outside clearly, while any areas denoted in the dark blue paint cannot be seen. These dark blue areas that are not sprayed include the engine bay, inner bonnet (or under the bonnet), door pillars, inner tailgate and the rear end floor panel (or rear spare tyre compartment).

Whole Car Respray option: Our typical whole car respray will include all outer and inner panels excluding the panels inside the engine bay and rear end floor panel (or rear spare tyre compartment). To respray the engine bay panels may require lifting out the engine which comes with additional labour costs. For the rear end floor panel, it is usually covered by a carpet or tray cover and is not usually removed.
Key Difference #2:
One major factor in considering which to go for depends on the downtime of the work required. Exterior only respray usually can be completed in 7-9 days whereas a whole car respray takes up to 21-25 days. The significant difference lies in the number of panels required to remove and spray painting of the inner/outer panels will require multiple times of spray painting.
There are car workshops that can offer a very short downtime, but the coverage of work may not be as comprehensive as us. At Ngai Hong Spray Painting, we believe in quality workmanship and the best way is to remove the panels for the paint coverage to be thorough. For older cars however, we may choose not to remove the panels as the parts may disintegrate once removed.
To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.

For a colour change for your car, you can still opt for an exterior-only respray if your car's current paint is a dark shade, as shown in the photos above. It all depends on the contrast of the colour of your interior trims, inner car body colour to the exterior car body colour. Any color change is feasible as long as the car owner approves it.
