Spray painting of Brake Calipers - Worth to "Zeng"?

sample of worn out brake caliper and needs spray painting

One often wonders why do people spend time and money to "zeng" their brake calipers, a somewhat hidden and overlooked part of the car's aesthetics. After all, it does seem it is only serving as a functional clamp to the wheel rotor, to slow down the car when the brake pads grip the brake disk. At this point, we have to clarify that spray painting of your brake calipers will in no way affect the functionality or efficiency of your brake system, and is purely enhancing your car's aesthetics and corrosion resistance. We dive deep into understanding why spray painting your brake calipers would give your ride more depth, bring its colour into different dimensions, and its practical aspects of it.

1. Enhanced Aesthetics

Which Look Do You Prefer?

  • Car A

  • Car B

What better way to visualize how the brake calipers affect the look of your car than to have a comparison to look at. The car on the left is fitted with a normal looking caliper while the car on the right has been spray painted.

Well, did you feel that Car B's yellow brake calipers captured your attention very quickly? Our opinion is Car A is looking somewhat basic even though it has a nice sports rim design. On the other hand, the bright yellow brake caliper of Car B, behind its simple-designed silver sport rim, compliments the car body's colour and logo.

The best part is that your car does not have to be a "supercar" in order to showcase those nice brake calipers. We have found 3 cars fitted with beautifully painted brake calipers to showcase the colour depth and personality of the car, at the same time accentuating its owner's character and energy. Take for instance the 1st car, with its silver painted brake calipers blended in with its metallic grey sport rims, in a white car body with gloss black body kits. Though the colour of the brake calipers are subtle, they emphasise the car's sportiness and fierce look. The other 2 cars are classic examples of how the bright paint of the brake calipers captures your attention, like a hidden gem shining brightly but not stealing the entire limelight away from the body.

2. Limitless Colour Customisation

The choice of color for your brake calipers is entirely up to your personal preference. It all depends on the type of look that each individual envision their ride to look.

Popular options include:

  • Black: A classic and stealthy choice that complements most car colors.

  • Red: Adds a touch of aggression and performance.

  • Blue: Creates a cool and modern look.

  • Yellow: A bold and attention-grabbing color.

  • Custom Colors: Match your car's accent color or create a truly unique look. You can get creative here!

You may also choose to customise its sticker or wording on the calipers, so long as your calipers allow you to do so. The sticker is sealed into the paint work with the top coat, so it will not peel off even after long usage.

3. Corrosion Prevention

We now touch on the practical aspects of spray painting our brake calipers. These calipers may get worn out due to the harsh operating conditions it gets. These are some of the reasons why your calipers may look "exhausted".

  • High temperature from friction generated by brakes

  • Exposure to the elements of sun and rain

  • Brake carbon deposits on calipers and bonding on surface paint

  • Steel and iron calipers tend to be rust prone

A spray painted brake calipers is not immune due to wear and tear and the environmental conditions, but the paint gives it added protection. That said, it is not a simple task to maintain your brake calipers, since it is hard to reach and wash. You may get off the shelf wheel cleaners for your rims and brake calipers that specially remove brake dust (iron in composition), and hose it down with water.

Final Thoughts

Some people may find it unnecessary to spray paint their brake calipers as they are obscure from sight, or a hassle to "zeng" such a small piece of their car. Apart from the benefits of spray painting, we believe our ride is a reflection of who we are, and colours can paint that picture for us. Ultimately, the decision is yours. Here at Ngai Hong Spray Painting, we provide brake caliper spray painting and sticker design customisation. Let us know how we may help you on your quest to bring your car to the next level.
